When completed, in May 2020, the Transmission Gully Project will provide a new, 27 km long, four-lane motorway north of Wellington, New Zealand. This modern and safe main highway will bypass the coastal communities and space limited choke points which resulted in ever increasing traffic congestion on the existing SH1 highway.
The project provided numerous challenges throughout the design, production, and construction phases, including constraints due to certain specifications required for the project such as cold weather and harsh environmental factors. Yet, 61 km of roads, including 37 km newly built, 24 km refurbished, 12 new interchanges, and 33 new bridges and viaducts, were completed in only four years.
To support the upgraded road running along the Kingna River, Reinforced Earth (Pty) Ltd South Africa, AECOM, and Basil Read partnered up to provide a solution that is functional and simultaneously sensitive to the very specific requirements of the project.
